You can start from where you are

When people around you seem to have a plan, it is easy to feel that your uncertainty needs an apology. It does not. Start by identifying the question: is it your subject, the work it might lead to, further study, or not knowing what you enjoy?

Use what you already know

Think about a project, an assignment or an activity that held your attention. What part was interesting: the subject, making something, explaining it, working with others, or solving a problem? A specific observation is more useful than deciding whether you are passionate enough.

Try a small version

If a possible direction interests you, choose a short task related to the actual work. Write a piece, analyse a small public dataset, help organise an event or speak to someone doing the role. The purpose is to get new information, not prove that you have found your calling.

Include the practical realities

Write down how much time and money you can use to explore, and what responsibilities you need to protect. Check course or job requirements with the institution or employer. A useful plan needs to fit your circumstances.

Set a date to look again

After trying something, ask what you enjoyed, what was difficult and what you want to understand next. Choose one next action. You can review a direction as you learn more.

If you want a conversation

If you are 18 or over, you can contact MyFire on your own. We will pass your enquiry to a relevant partner, who can explain the guidance available for your situation and confirm any fees before you decide.

Before acting on this guidance
